He passed away on November 27, 2014 after a two year long health regression after a stroke.
He was born the 2nd of 13 children to Allie and Bettie Haefner in Mankato, Minnesota. Mike had a love of life that included working on Volkswagen cars, pool and dart leagues, photography, and helping those in need throughout his 66 years of life. Mike was a mechanic by nature and also worked for Southern Minnesota Construction. He preferred not to be sedentary, but always in motion. Mike grew up in a rural 4-H farm family. He served his country in the United States Air Force, which began his love of traveling. He was stationed in both Thailand and Germany during the Vietnam War. Mike married Debra Decker (Leiferman), and later divorced.
He is survived by their two sons, Brian (Ellen) and Justin (Abby) and four grandchildren, Emily & Matthew (Brian) and Ben & Suzy (Justin). He is also survived by his mother, Bettie, and his siblings: Pat (Roger) Berg, Jim (Kim) Haefner, Ken Haefner, Dianne (Earle) Traxler, Donna Anderson, Karen Kelley, Ron Haefner, Rick Haefner, Carolyn (Brad) Karstens, Cliff Haefner, Mary Lou (Brian) Krenik and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father Allie and his infant sister, Sharon.
A celebration gathering will be held at 5 pm, Wednesday December 3rd in Mankato at the Morson-Ario VFW. A burial with funeral honors will be held at 1:45PM, Thursday December 4th in Minneapolis at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
