James Swindler was the son of Henry Boston Swindler and Ellen Gaunt.

Captain James W. Swindler, one of the oldest and best known of Greene county's citizens, died on Monday afternoon at two o'clock at his home in Caesar Creek Township. He had been ill for the past three weeks, suffering from heart trouble, and for some days, his condition had been such that there had been little or no hope of his recovery. Realizing that the end had come, he called to one of the members of his household and immedediately expired, with the words, "I'm gone," still on his lips. Captain Swindler was not a soldier in the Civil War, but gained his title from being the commander of a militia company in Virginia. He was born in Rappahannock County, Virginia, in 1826, and was thus, at the time of his death, 78 years of age. He came to this county from Virginia in 1857, together with his wife and several children. They settled in Caesarcreek Township on the farm where he continued to live from that time until his death, a period of about 48 years, occupying the same house, which, in an early day, had been a school house and was later converted by Mr. Swindler into a residence. He was twice married, his first wife Miss Lucy Johnson, and of this union nine children were born, all of whom lived to manhood and womanhood, and there being seven now living, as follows: Mr. John H. Swindler, who is the proprietor of the Arlington boarding house on South Detroit Street, Xenia; James M. Swindler of Covington, KY; Mrs. A.R. Huffman of Dayton, OH; Mrs. Adda Brown, wife of Dr. Brown of Lebanon; Mr. E.M. Swindler of Michigan; and Mr. Jordan Swindler of Peru, IN. His first wife died in 1882. His second wife, who before marriage was Miss Anna Shane, died eight years ago. There are three surviving children as a result of this union as follows: Thomas Swindler and Miss Sallie and Nellie Swindler. All of whom resided at home with their father. The funeral will take place at his late residence on Thursday afternoon at one o'clock, and the burial will be at New Burlington.
