Opera Singer. He was a tenor and a friend of Richard Wagner's, who chose him as one of the first two singers to perform Parsival at its first performances at the Bayreuth Festival. He also was the first to perform Tristan in "Tristan und Isolde" and Stolzing in the "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" at the same festival. Son of a school teacher, he studied music in Celle, and became a teacher there and then a teacher in Goslar. After a few years, he decided on attempting a career as a soloist and joined the Royal Court Opera in Berlin (today the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden) with success. He continued his studies, appearing at opera houses in Riga, Freiburg, Hamburg, and Bremen, before moving to the Hofopera Dresden, where he became a regular performer from 1880 through 1890. It was there he met Wagner in 1881. He also performed as a guest soloist with the Royal Opera in Covent Garden, London, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. He retired from the stage in 1896, but began a teaching career soon after due to his financial losses in a bank crash. A street in Dresden bears his name.
