DeForest Amanzel Whitford was the son of Rebecca Brown Whitford and Nathaniel A. Whitford and the husband of Mary Emily Allen Whitford. They married in July of 1881.
As a young man Amanzel enlisted in the 13th Regiment Michigan Volunteer Infantry, Co. A. In Nov. of 1864 his Infantry Regiment consolidated with General William T. Sherman's Army and took part in Sherman's "March to the Sea". Amanzel and his comrades took part the the Grand Review Parade in May of 1864 in Washington, D.C. While he was serving his county, Amanzel's father passed away in September of 1864 in Waverly, Van Buren, Michigan. His mother, Rebecca Brown Whitford and family members would later move to Dixon County, Nebraska.
