Major League Baseball Player. For eight seasons (1971 until 1978), he was a pitcher with the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants. Born Charles Prosek Williams, he attended Great Neck South High School in New York and later Parsons College in Iowa. Selected by the Mets during the 1968 Amateur Draft, he marked his Major League debut on April 23, 1971. During that year, he pitched in 31 games. Williams began the 1972 season in the Minor Leagues and was sent to the Giants on May 11, 1972, in exchange for Willie Mays, who turned 41 a few days earlier. Thus, establishing a bit of baseball trivia "Who was the player traded for the legendary Willie Mays?" Williams, primarily a reliever, produced a career-high six wins in 1977 and matched his number of games pitched with 55 that season. In 268 career regular-season games, he compiled a 23-win, 22-loss record with a lifetime 3.97 ERA in 573 innings pitched. After retiring from baseball, he settled in Florida. Williams, who battled Parkinson's disease for several years, died of complications from heart-related issues.
