Nobel Prize Recipient. In 2005, he was co-recipient of the Chemistry Nobel Prize for his contribution to organic synthesis, providing a detailed mechanism for how metathesis reactions are catalysed. Trained as a chemical engineer, he graduated from the Lyon School of Industrial Chemistry in 1954. Going on to work at the French Institute of Petroleum in 1960, he researched new processes for the petrochemical industry. In the 1970s and 1980s, Chauvin published several books and chemistry magazine articles on a variety of molecules, including pharmaceuticals and advanced polymers. He became research director at the French Institute of Petroleum in 1991 and was honorary research director after his retirement in 1995. He also continued to carry out academic research for the Lyon School of Chemistry, Physics and Electronics. In 2005, he elected a member of the French Academy of Sciences.
