Major League Baseball Player, Coach. For eleven seasons (1951 to 1961), he played at the second base, third base and shortstop positions with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds, Washington Senators, Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Angels. Born Everett Lamar Bridges, he was raised in California and attended Polytechnic High School (Long Beach). Signed by Brooklyn as an amateur free agent in 1947, he marked his Major League debut with the Dodgers on April 17, 1951. He achieved all-star status while in a Senators' uniform in 1958 and the following season (1959), he produced a career-high 102 hits as a Detroit Tiger. In 919 regular season games, he compiled 562 hits with a lifetime .247 batting average. After retiring as a player, he embarked upon a lengthy career as a coach and Minor League manager. From 1962 to 1963 and 1968 to 1971, he served on the Los Angeles/California Angels' coaching staff in 1985, coached with the San Francisco Giants. His witty one-liners directed at players he managed and coached earn him the distinction as being one of the most colorful characters in the game.
