TERRELL TAYLOR "TERRY" GIBBS Obituary
Gibbs, Terrell "Terry" Taylor, PhD Of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts born in Houston, Texas on November 16, 1950; passed away at the age of 63 on August 15, 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. Terry; the scientist, teacher, lover of the arts, music, tomorrow's technology, martial arts, and conversation will be missed by family, friends, colleagues and students. His warm heart, insatiable appetite for knowledge, and friendly smile were always with him during his many travels.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Joe. T. Gibbs and Priscilla J. Montgomery, and wife Lana Young Gibbs.
He is survived by his loving family; brother Randall (Rando) Gibbs, sister Cassie Gibbs Kaiser, husband Jeff, nephews Ryan and Brandon all of Houston, Texas. Sister Mollie Gibbs Garner, husband Rob, niece K.T. Gibbs of the Bay Area in California, brother Brian T. Gibbs, nephews, Ian and Keith, of Kings Beach, California, and stepmother Patsy Cherry Gibbs of Chula Vista, California.
Terry received his undergraduate degree in biology from MIT and his doctoral training in pharmacology from Harvard Medical School. He pursued his interests in neuropharmacology, first at Downstate Medical Center at SUNY Health Science Center in New York , and then at Boston University as an Associate Professor in the department of Pharmacology. His discoveries were revealed in more than 45 publications and many abstracts presented at the Society of Neuroscience Annual Meetings. He was the recent recipient of the Excellence in Education and Mentoring Award from the Neurosteroid Congress, he played a key role in the design and implementation of the curriculum for the Biomolecular Pharmacology Predoctoral Training Program at Boston University and guided innumerable PhD candidates. He taught medical, dental, and master's degree students at BU the principles of pharmacology.
He was an ardent student in the art of Aikido, in which he held a black belt. He valued the many friends he made in the dojos in Massachusetts and Texas. Among his passions were movies, video games, and reading. He was an avid collector of science fiction and comic books!
