Mayor of Akron, 1920-1922.

Chairman of the Akron Paint and Varnish Company, which was founded by his father.

In 1909 Beck organized the Portage Engineering Co. and went into the business of street paving. Because of his engineering experience, then Mayor Laub appointed him Akron Service Director in 1916.

In 1920 Beck was elected president of Akron's first City Council under its new charter. When Laub resigned to become City Administrator, Beck automatically became mayor, and served a two-year term.

Beck decided not to run for mayor after the expiration of his term, telling a Beacon Journal reporter: "I decided there was a lot more future in the varnish business than in mayoring."

Beck was a former president of the Akron City Club and the Rotary Club. He was a member of the Portage Country Club, a Mason and a member of the First Congregational Church.

Carl was married in 1911 to Imogene Conner and they had two sons, Carl Jr. and William. Carl and Imogene were divorced and Carl remarried to his wife, Maude, who survived him.
