Motion Picture Screenwriter. He will perhaps be best remembered for his co-penning of the story for the film "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955). His father was a physician, his uncle was the legendary Hollywood filmmaker Adolph Zukor. He studied Art at the University of Iowa and later served with the United States Army during World War II. Stationed in Europe, under the direction of General Patton, Stern saw action and was recipient of a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Upon his return home, he entered the movie industry as a dialogue director and in 1951, he contributed story lines to his first film "Teresa." Among his other movie credits include the early Paul Newman effort "The Rack" (1956), "The Outsider" (1961), "The Ugly American" (1963) and "Rachel, Rachel" (1968, directed by Paul Newman). He earned an Emmy Award nomination for the TV-Movie "Sybil" (1976).
