Toronto Mayor. Phillips served as the Mayor of Toronto, Ontario, from 1955 to 1962. A highly respected lawyer and politician, he was the first Jewish person to serve as Mayor of that city. A founding member of the Ontario Conservative Party's youth wing, he served as a Conservative Candidate for the Spadina electoral district in the federal election of 1935, placing second. He also served as a member of the Toronto City Council in 1926. Known as the 'mayor of the people,' he was the main force behind the construction of the Toronto City Hall. Phillips passed away in Toronto, Ontario, in January 1976, at the age of 83. The Nathan Phillips Square which opened in in 1965, was named in his honour.
