James E. McCloughan

(May 4, 1945 - January 9, 2015)

U.S. Veteran James Eugene McCloughan was born May 4, 1945 in Valentine, NE to Bert and Helen (Grooms) McCloughan. James passed away January 9, 2015 at Cherry County Hospital.
James grew up north of Valentine. He attended Pine Bluff grade school northeast of Valentine. He attended Valentine High School where he was a member of FFA and choir. He graduated in 1963.

In 1965 Jim joined the Army. He was a member of the 538th Engineer Battalion. He was a heavy equipment mechanic during the Vietnam War. Stationed in Thailand he met and married Nadda Niratsai. They were married Christmas day 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand. Their daughter Sheila was born while they lived there. Jim brought his new family to the states in 1968. They had two more children Thomas James and Judy Ann. Jim followed his love of being a mechanic. He worked for Pierce Raubach, State Dept. of Roads and Dwight Todd. Eventually Jim was able to open his own business. Jim was very active with the American Legion and was a member for 37 years. He was involved with the many activities sponsored by the American Legion, such as 1884 Days, Easter Egg Hunt, and the many breakfast and suppers put on at the Vet’s Club. He was always willing to help with the cooking and whatever else needed done.

In 1984 Jim was diagnosed with diabetes. From then until the time of his death he put up a strong fight against many health issues including heart surgeries, broken hip and eventually failing kidneys which resulted in Jim taking dialysis. This didn’t keep him down as he still worked on vehicles if someone needed help. He helped with race cars, derby cars and found time to go fishing. He loved to take his kids and grandchildren fishing.

Jim was a man who seemed rough around the edges but he had a heart of gold, especially when it came to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved to get his grandchildren sugared up on sweet treats and send them home. He also had to make sure he gave his grandchildren their first bikes. They were used bikes he would buy and fix up. To the grandchildren they were priceless.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents Bert and Helen McCloughan, sisters Catherine (Grooms) Petersen and infant sister Sharon McCloughan.
