The modest Austrian brewer with a sonorous name – Friedrich Emanuel Austerlitz, known as Fritz, was born in Linz in 1868. He boarded the Red Star's Westernland in Antwerp and came to New York on 26 October 1892. Family legend says that he left Austria with disgust – he did not salute an officer properly. This officer was his brother Ernst.

After disembarking in New York, Fritz went to Omaha, Nebraska. There he soon met the much younger Johanna (Ann) Geilus, a daughter of German Lutherans, from Prussia and Alsace. They married in 1894 in the First Evangelical Church in Omaha. They had a daughter, Adele, born in 1896, and a son, the future dancer, actor and singer Fred, born in 1899.

He would never see his son achieve the heights of super stardom. He died at the age of 55.
