E.R. Bryan, 48, Dies: Religious Leader
New York Times - December 19, 1954

Ernest R. Bryan, president of the International Society of Christian Endeavor, died at midnight Friday of a heart attack at his home in Washington, D.C. He was 48 years old.

Mr. Bryan had held the post since succeeding the Rev. Dr. Daniel A. Poling, who called him "the Field Marshal of Christian Endeavor's Forward Movement."

Associated with the Christian Endeavor movement from his youth, Mr. Bryan had been editor of The Christian Endeavor World since 1947. An official of the World Peace Foundation, he also had been a director of publications for the United State Public Health Service and the National Archives Establishment.

In World War II, Mr. Bryan rose from the rank of lieutenant (j.g.) to that of lieutenant commander. Since 1946 he had been head of project supervision, Motion Picture and Training Films Production, of the Navy Department. He also was a member of the testing and training committee of the Research and Development Board of the National Military Establishment.

On his graduation from Haverling High School in Bath, N.Y., Mr. Bryan entered Syracuse University, where he received an A. B. degree in 1929. He studied at Harvard in 1930 and later at George Washington University, form which he received an A. M. in 1933.

Mr. Bryan was field secretary for the World Peace Foundation, 1929-31; educational secretary, 1934-36; and assist and director for educational publications of the National Educational Association, 1931-34. He was a special writer for the Public Health Service in 1938-42.

The author of "America Turns to Social Security," (1938), and many contributions to journals, he belonged to the National Press Club of Washington.

In 1932 he married Mildred Seymour Gott.

Suddenly, on Friday, December 17, 1954, at his residence, 3829 Cathedral Ave., NW, Dr. Ernest R. Bryan, beloved husband of Mildred Gott Bryan, father of Carolyn N. Bryan, stepson of Mrs. D. Beach Bryan, brother of Dr. Leslie A. Bryan, of Champagne, Ill.; Leland B. Bryan, of Conring, N.Y.; and Mrs. Herbert Hedges, of Syracuse, N.Y.

Friends are invited to call at his late residence until 11 a.m. Monday, December 20, thence to the Metropolitan Methodist Church, Nebraska and New Mexico Aves., NW, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Interment Rock Creek Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Christian Endeavor, 1221 E. Broad St., Columbus, Ohio.
