A 1913 graduate of Waynesburg College and a former teller and assistant cashier in Waynesburg area banks, he was born May 15, 1888, on the old Judge Mark Gordon homestead in Franklin Township. He was a son of John and Lucinda Gordon Meighen.
He attended Franklin and Whiteley Township public schools and taught for six years after graduating from college, including two years as a teacher and coach at Waynesburg High School.
Mr. Meighen served in Company K, 10th Infantry Regiment, from 1910 to 1916, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the infantry after he attended officer's candidate school in 1917. He served in France and Germany during World War I with the 54th Pioneer Infantry Regiment, and with the Army of Occupation at Coblenz, Germany. He was separated from service in July 1919 as a first lieutenant.
In 1927, he accepted a post with the Pennsylvania bank examiners, Pittsburgh District, and in 1938 became comptroller of Colonial Trust Company in Pittsburgh, serving in that capacity until Colonial's merger in 1945 with Pittsburgh National Bank.
From 1945 untill his retirement at the age of 82, he worked for Snodgrass & Co., a CPA firm whose specialty was bank audits.
He married twice. His first wife, Edith Ely, whom he married September 15, 1919, died November 9, 1922. One daughter, Mrs. Robert (Martha) Jamison of Pryor, Okla., survives that union.
His second wife, Bertha Fenske Meighen, survives with two sons, George A. Meighen of Atlanta, Ga., and John L. Meighen Jr. of Pittsburgh.
Also surviving are nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Adelyn Thomas of Washington, who is the last of a family of 12 children; and a number of nieces and nephews.
