Joseph Vogelgesang Jr was born and raised in the area of lima, Ohio. He was one of the six sons of Joseph Vogelgesang Sr and Arabella Knapp. He graduated from South High School in 1937 where he played on the football team. He later worked for the Westinghouse Electric Company before enlisting in the US Navy on June 2, 1940. Served as a Fireman Second Class Vogelgesang and was lost on the USS West Virginia during the Pearl Harbor attack.
Three other brothers served in World War II. Two in the US Navy and one in the US Army.
