John was a native of Wiesbaden, Germany, who immigrated to the United States in 1857. On 19 Feb 1863 he married Julia Gross and they had eleven children: Frank, John, Louiza, Augustus, Infant Boy, Mary, George, Julia, Katherine, Arthur and Josephine. According to the 1880 Census John was employed as a mantle polisher. By 1900 he was working as a hardwood finisher. At the time of his death he was a matcher in the paint department of the L&N Railroad. John died of liver cancer and grip at the age of 60.
