Elisha was the brother of Civil War Maj. Gen. John McAllister Schofield. He married Hannah Losay Teasdale in Brandon, Michigan on 9 August 1866.

By 1870, he was working as the assessor for the city of Richmond, Virginia. He was killed in the Virginia State Capitol disaster of April 1870.
