Edith Korpi, age 98, a resident of the Gardens at Felician Village, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 6, 2015 after a short battle with cancer.

On May 14, 1916 Edith was born and raised on a farm in St. Charles, Minnesota, daughter of the late Charles and Lydia (Nienow) Persons. Following graduation from St. Charles Public Schools, she earned her undergraduate degree from Taylor University, Upland, Indiana, and went on to receive her Masters in Social Work from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. While pursuing her Masters, she worked at the Unity Settlement House in North Minneapolis, where she met her future husband, Milton Korpi, and they were married on October 11, 1941. He preceded her in death on December 3, 1990.

Following their marriage, Edith started her career as a Case Worker for Scott County, Minnesota. She continued her education and completed a second degree in teaching from St. Cloud State University, and taught in the Litchfield, Minnesota school district. After moving with the family to Manitowoc in 1962, she was employed at Sheboygan Family Services, followed by becoming the first School Social worker for the Manitowoc Elementary Schools. She was one of the founding members of the first Day Care Center in Manitowoc, and continued serving on the Board for a number of years. Edith was very active with the First Presbyterian Church, serving as a Deaconess for many years. After her retirement, she served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and as a guide for the Pine Crest Historical Village. She was an avid reader, and kept the Public Library busy searching for new and interesting books. Edith enjoyed travelling, especially Elder Hostel trips with her sister Grace, researching and writing an extensive family history, and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her two daughters: Jan (Rob) Karl, Kaukauna; Carol Yohanek, Menasha; and one son: Ron (Marie) Korpi, Sydney; six grandchildren: Chad Karl and his special friend: Kim; Josh (Tammie) Karl; Teresa (Derek) Yohanek; Scott (Robin) Yohanek; Sarah (Nate) Koch; Jennifer Yohanek; 14 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. Edith was preceded in death by her husband: Milton; her sister: Grace Gohdes; three brothers: Orville, Milton and Cyril Persons; one infant granddaughter; and in-laws.
