He was a 1949 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School with a BS in Economics. He served in the US Army Air Corps, US 8th Air Force during WWII, from 1940 - 1947. He began his service as an infantryman in the Army and rose to 1LT in the Army Air Corps, serving on B-17 bombing missions in the European Theater. His crew was shot down over Schweinfurt, Germany, on October 14, 1943 and he was taken as a POW by German forces. He was later liberated by US Army forces under General Patton on April 29, 1945. He was a member of the American Ex-POW's; 2nd Schweinfurt Memorial Assn; Stalag Luft III; 8th Air Force Historical Society; KY Aviation Museum; and the VFW. Among his military awards and decorations were the Distinguished Flying Cross; the Bronze Star; and the Purple Heart. Following his military service, he was a hospital administrator, working at the following: The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia; Oakbourne Colony Hospital of PA; DC Miners Memorial Hospital (1955-1963); Appalachian Regional Hospitals (1963-1976); KY Hospital Assn (1976-1980); and Clark County Hospital (1980-1986). Through his role as Executive VP of Administration at the Appalachian Regional Hospitals, he also helped found a 10-hospital system that was the vision of John L Lewis. He also volunteered at the VA and was a member of the Lexington Flying Club and the Silver Wings Fraternity.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ivan Eugene Coberly and Marthella Stevens Shryock; his first wife, M Lucille Coberly; his second wife of 36 years, Louise Thirsk Coberly; his sister, Bette Hensell; and his brother, John Coberly. He was survived by his daughter; two step-daughters; a grandson; 10 great-grandchildren; and nephews.
Visitation was held on Friday, January 30, 2015, at Milward-Southland. Funeral service was held on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at Milward-Southland. Interment was March 13, 2015.
