Robert 'Bob' R Ryan, age 89, of Minneapolis, was released to God and his parents, WD 'Rosy' and Anna Ryan on April 28, 2014, peacefully at home, after struggling with congestive heart failure for one year.
Bob graduated high school in Eau Claire WI and attended the University of Minnesota, broadcasting with the Radio Guild on KUOM. He proudly served in the Marines during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Bob started his long and rewarding career in news reporting on radio in St. Cloud. He joined KSTP Radio in 1948 and was a pioneer in television reporting from its inception in May until 1971. In 1971 he joined KROC in Rochester MN as Director of News and Public Affairs. He joined Minnesota News Network in St Paul as Anchor and Editor from 1985 until he retired to do travel commentaries on KNXR Radio in Rochester. Bob was fiercely patriotic and traveled extensively seeing firsthand the loss of freedoms in Soviet block countries. He gave speeches for many years about the blessings we had living in this country. He also reported from Israel and Vietnam. He was a life member of VFW #5555 and American Legion #435 in Richfield. In Rochester, he was a Corporate Board Member of Rochester Methodist Hospital, Rotary Club, Salvation Army and Senior Citizen Services. He received his BA degree from Winona State University in 1974. Bob served on Press Club's Minnesota News Council, was named Outstanding Broadcast Personality of 1990 by Minnesota Broadcaster's Association, and in 2001 was elected to Pavek's Museums Broadcasting Hall of Fame. In retirement, he enjoyed being a longtime volunteer at Fairview Southdale Hospital, VA Medical Center, Pavek Museum and Church of the Holy Name.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Betty of 66 years; son, Gregory of Studio City CA; and daughter, Patty of Burbank CA.
