Musician. He was a guitarist and a founding member of the surf rock group, the Chantays. As a 17 year-old at California's Santa Ana High School, he and another band member co-wrote the instrumental hit, Pipeline. In 1963 the song, with an unforgettable beginning riff, became sort of an unofficial surf theme: Pipeline is listed as one of the 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. The Chantays' songs have been on music charts all over the world and they helped make surf music an international success. They were the only rock and roll band to ever perform on the Lawrence Welk Show. The Chantays are included in The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. On April 12, 1996, Brian Carman and the Chantays were honored by Hollywood’s Rock Walk that was founded to honor individuals and bands that have made lasting and important contributions to music. Brian Carman went on to work as a plant manager for a guitar company and he held other jobs in the music industry. Carman married his first wife, Katie Anderson, on December 29, 1963 and they raised a family in Orange County, California. After Katie's death from breast cancer in 2002, he remarried. Although the Chantays never had another song as big a hit as Pipeline, they continued to play together. Carman performed with the Chantays until 2012, when he began to have health problems. He passed away at age 69 from complications of Crohn's disease.
