Thomas H. Lauer
Plane Crash Kills Youth
Was A Son Of Former Ottoville Residents

Second Lieutenant Thomas H. Lauer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lauer, of Toledo, formerly of Ottoville, was killed Wednesday of last week in an airplane accident at Ft. George Wright, Washington. The Lauer family is well known in the Ottoville community, where they have a number of relatives. Details of the accident were not learned immediately.

The young man was born in Toledo where he attended St. John's High School and graduated from Central High school in that city. He was valedictorian of his class. In 1938 he was appointed to the U. S. Military Academy and graduated fourth high in his class in May of this year. He won his Freshman numerals at West Point in lacrosse and was associate editor of the bi-monthly cadet magazine.

Upon graduation he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the army and was sent to the Engineer's school at Ft. Belvoir, Va. He was assigned to the engineers battalion at Geiger Field, near Spokane Wash., August 1, and recently had been battalion executive officer.

Lieutenant Lauer is survived by his parents, three brothers, Robert, a midshipman at the U. S. Naval Academy, John and Daniel at home, and a sister, Carol, also at home.

Military rites were held in the Toledo Catholic parish church and burial was made in that city.

from a testimonial by R. H. C. on the website of West Point Association of Graduates:

"Thomas Henry Lauer was killed in an aircraft accident while learning to fly. He had taken up flying on his own with the consent of his commanding officer in order to prepare himself to better carry out his duties as Executive Officer of the 846th Engineer Aviation Battalion. ...

"Tom, the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred John Lauer, was born in Toledo, Ohio on August 21, 1919 where he lived until he entered the Academy. As a boy he attended Cathedral Chapel Grade School, and St. John's High School (three years). He was graduated in 1937 as valedictorian of his class from Central Catholic High School which he attended for only one year. He then entered DeSales College in Toledo where he studied for one year prior to his entrance to the USMA. He was an honor student everywhere he studied. He won his appointment to the Academy in a competitive examination given by the Honorable John F. Hunter, U.S. Representative from the Ninth District of Ohio...

"Tom's career from his graduation on was varied. His first assignment was to the Engineer School at Fort Belvoir. From there he went to the 922nd Engineer Aviation Regiment where in a short time he served as Acting Regimental Adjutant, Acting Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, Assistant Regimental S-3, and finally as Executive Officer of the 2nd Battalion. His Battalion was then activated as a separate Battalion, the S46th, and he retained his assignment as Executive Officer. While in the 922nd his service was briefly interrupted by a course of instruction he took at the Camouflage School, Hamilton Field, California. On November 29, 1942 Tom received his promotion to the rank of First Lieutenant and three days later was killed. So his career ended prematurely while he was in the height of his ascendency. He would have gone far in his chosen profession..."
