From County Down, Ireland, he came to Ohio in 1851. He enlisted in Company K, 8th Ohio Infantry in April 1861. He was wounded in the thigh - by a ramrod - at Antietam in September 1862 and discharged for disability in March 1863. He was a clerk in the Pension Office, US Department of the Interior, Washington, DC from 1871.
