US Presidential Advisor, Author. He was a key aide and advisor to President Dwight D. Eisenhower for both his presidential terms (1953 until 1961). Raised in St. Louis, his father was an attorney, his mother a skilled pianist, he earned a doctorate in English Literature from Harvard University. Following graduation, he taught humanities courses and later landed a job as a junior speechwriter at the White House, during the early part of the Eisenhower Administration. Ewald assisted President Eisenhower in penning a two-volume memoir "The White House Years: Mandate for Change" (1953-1956) and "Waging Peace" (1956-1961). Ewald went on to author a series of books including "The Mask of Jonathan Swift" (1967), "Eisenhower, the President: Crucial Days, 1951 to 1960" (1981) and "Who Killed Joe McCarthy?" (1984). He died from respiratory failure.
