Opera Singer. A contralto, she is remembered for her performances in a number of the world's major venues. Raised in Dusseldorf, she graduated from high school in 2000 at the St. Ursula Gymnasium, studied voice with KS Marga Schiml in Karlsruhe, and received a Wagner Scholarship for training at Bayreuth. Maria built a concert repertoire primarily around the works of Beethoven and Mahler while learning a number of operatic roles including Erda and the First Norn from Wagner's "Ring Cycle," A Voice from Above in Richard Strauss' "Die Frau Ohne Schatten" and the First Maid of the same composer's "Elektra," and Anna from Hector Berlioz' "Les Troyens." She was acclaimed in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and the Missa Solemnis in Vienna and Turin, gave highly praised Rome performances of Mahler's Second and Eighth Symphonies, and was heard in Mahler's Third Symphony in Berlin and Frankfurt. On the operatic stage, she was heard at Toronto, Leipzig, Madrid, and at her home city's Deutsch Oper am Rhein, sang her two Strauss roles in Salzburg, made her January 27, 2012 Metropolitan Opera debut as the First Norn in "Gotterdammerung," was first heard at La Scala Milano in March of 2012 in "Die Frau ohne Schatten," and was highly praised as Erda in Covent Garden presentations of "Das Rheingold" and "Siegfried" as well as in a BBC Radio broadcast of "Das Rheingold." Part of a well-received Geneva production of "The Ring," Maria was returning from Barcelona performances of "Siegfried" when she was killed along with her husband and baby when Germanwings Flight 9525 crashed in the French Alps. Her voice can be heard on a number of recorded performances as well as on a complete preservation of "Das Rheingold."
