In the 1850 LaRue County census, Nicholas Cheltz was family 127. He was 33 years old, occupation - none, born in Kentucky. His wife was Eliza, 25. Their children were listed as: Mary E., 7; P. J., 5 (F); S. E., 3 (FZ); and Sarah F., age 1 year.

In the 1860 Larue County Census, Nicholas Cheltz was family 1008. He was 43 years old, a Laborer born in Kentucky. His wife, E., was 38. Their children were: Maggie E., 16; M. J., 14; S. Elizabeth, 12; Sarah F., 10; A. E., 7; D. T., 5; and J. H., 2 years old. Another daughter, Martha, was 2 years old and living next door in the household of Satin Jones, a 32 year old Shoemaker, born in Delaware. His wife was Margaret, age 20.

Nicholas Cheltz was born in LaRue County in about 1822 and was 40 years old when he joined the Union Army in October 1, 1863. He was a son of John A. Cheltz of LaRue county. Nicholas married to Eliza McClure in Hardin county on 24 June 1842. He enrolled in Company I, 37th Ky Infantry at Elizabethtown on Oct. 1, 1863, under Captain James W. Read. He began as a private, however, he was soon promoted to corporal on Dec. 22, 1863. Later, he was promoted to sergeant. He was taken ill at Saltville, Virginia in the winter of 1864. He was sick because of cold and exposure and contracted rheumatism in his hips and legs. He as honorably discharged at Louisville on Feb. 1, 1865. (See Deed Book 5, page 398, for a copy of his discharge). He was described as 5 ft. 11-1/2 inches tall, gray eyes, light hair and light skin. ( See family 1008 in 1860 Census).

After the war, he returned home to farm near Leafdale and Gibson communities. He was able to do limited work, and he was under the treatment of Dr. W. E. Rodman. He filed for a pension in August of 1886. In 1889, Dr. Rodman stated that he had practiced medicine for twenty years and had been the Cheltz family doctor for 18 yrars. He backed up the veteran's pension claim.

In the 1880 LaRue County Census for the Hodgenville District, Nicholas Cheltz was family 129. He was 60 years of age, a Farmer born in Kentucky. His father in Kentucky and his mother in North Carolina. His wife, Eliza, was 56. The children at home: Mary E., 35; Loncy Ellen, 28; and Ann Eliza, age 26 years.

Nicholas died at Gibson on May 18, 1888. He was survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. Margaret J. Price, wife of George Price; Mrs. Lou Ellen Hash, wife of William Hash; Mrs Sarah F. Akeridge, wife of William Akeridge; Annie E. Cheltz; Thomas J. Cheltz; and Martha A. Akeridge. Nicholas Cheltz is buried in the old Little Mount Cemetery, just west of Leafdale.
