Born to parents John and Emelia Faia of Palermo, Italy, May Coyne was born ''Maria Faia'' in New Orleans, LA on St. Patrick's Day in 1907.
When her mother died, she started raising her siblings at 16, and followed her father and older brother with the family when they moved to California eight years later.
Her love of holiday themes continued when she married her pre-deceased husband, Jim on Valentine's Day in the early forties. They lived in San Diego county. As a resident of Torrance for twenty years, she was recognized as ''Aunt May'' by all who knew and loved her.
Left of her siblings (Joseph, Frances, Salvador, Amelia and William) is her brother, John, Jr. and along with eight nephews, two nieces, and their families.
Aunt May's ''loves'': children-lost daughter Jane Ana at over three years old Sept. 11, 1948;. . .at 16 cared for her siblings; being born on St. Patrick's Day-Green her favorite color and Irish her favorite husband (Jim); independence-a free spirit and very active into her 90's; always wanting to serve-(''what can I do to help''. . .) very hospitable hostess to everyone-for family-for her husband's business; to travel-whenever and however often as possible-i.e. from New York to New Orleans (Mardi Gras); Las Vegas to Chicago,. . visiting family all over California to lake fishing.
Family, friends, and neighbors will gather for a service to be held January 21st at 11:00am at Rice Mortuary at 5310 Torrance Blvd in Torrance with interment to follow at Holy Cross in Culver City.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to any charity that focuses on her love for children, like St. Judes, World Vision, or either Mother's Home in Long Beach (''His Nesting Place'' or ''New Life Beginnings'').
