Mrs. Julia Volkmann passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Albert Rothe at Villard on Monday, September 15.
Mrs. Volkmann suffered a second stroke of paralysis Sunday morning from which she never regained consciousness. She was eighty-one years of age having been born in Germany, March 28, 1849. She came to the United States in 1873 and settled in Chicago where she was united in marriage to John Volkmann April 20, 1874. From Chicago they moved to Columbus, Wis., remaining there for about five years moving then to West Union, Minn., where they made their home for twenty-two years. They then came to Alexandria and lived here until 1919 when Mr. Volkmann passed away after which Mrs. Volkmann moved to Oregon and lived there for a year and a half. At the end of that time she returned here and resided here until she became ill. She removed to Brooten where she remained for a year and since then has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Albert Rothe, where she passed away. Three sons and five daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Volkman, six of of whom survive. Mrs. Rothe of Villard, Mrs. Maurer of Portland, Ore., Mrs. Jacob Wallin of Portland, Emil of Portland, William of Wenatchee, Wash., and Albert of Brooten. There are also twenty-one grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Albert Rothe home at Villard and at the Zion Lutheran church here. Rev. A. Bartz and Rev. Menzel officiated. She wa laid to rest beside her husband in Kinkead cemetery.
