His military records say he was born in Lancaster County, but his death certificate claims Philadelphia. He married Sarah J. Siter September 15, 1850, and fathered Thomas S. (b. 01/07/54), John R.J. (b. @1858), David H. (b. 06/05/60), and Anna J. (b. @1864). In 1860, he was a blacksmith living in the 29th Ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 4" tall with brown hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Philadelphia February 8, 1864, as a private with Battery E, 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (152nd Pa), and honorably discharged with his battery November 9, 1865, at Fortress Monroe, Virginia. According to the company register, he was twenty-nine when he enlisted. Whether that was a clerical error or John's wishful thinking is unknown.

He died in Philadelphia from injuries received from a horse kick and originally buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery at 4th & Diamond. When a housing project forced the destruction of that cemetery in 1950, he was reinterred to where he lies today.
