Wilburt E. Haggerty was born in Connecticut and grew up in Louisiana. He earned his bachelor and master degrees in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During the Korean War he was a Lieutenant at the Army's Arlington Hall Station. He met and married his wife settling in the Northern Virginia area. In 1988, he retired from the Naval Ordnance Station at Indian Head, Maryland. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the honorary research society Sigma Xi. He was active in the Ballston Group of Alcoholics Anonymous and the Young At Heart senior group at Saint Agnes Catholic Church in Arlington. He passed away at the age of 86 years on Sunday, December 38, 2014 at his home. Survivors included his wife, a son of Nokesville, two grandchildren and four step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Helen and son, Ned. Arrangements were by the Murphy Funeral Home at 4510 Wilson Boulevard in Arlington, Virginia. Funeral services were held at St. Agnes Catholic Church at 1910 North Randolph Street in Arlington. Interment was at Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
