Social Reformer. Wife of Jim Brady, White House Press Secretary under President Ronald Reagan. After her husband was shot in the head and left permanently disabled during an assassination attempt on President Reagan on March 30, 1981, she became an advocate for gun control. She and her husband worked hard to get the “Brady Bill” passed, which became the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act in 1993, signed into law by President Bill Clinton. This Act has prevented approximately 2 million gun purchases by those ineligible to possess a firearm and is estimated to have prevented many deaths. She was raised in Alexandria, Virginia, by her father Stanley Kemp, a teacher and later an FBI agent, and her mother, a former teacher. She married Jim Brady in 1973. She held various positions in the Republican Party for 10 years, from 1968 to 1978. Sara and Jim Brady were considered among the country’s leading crusaders for gun control. They later became active in the lobbying organization “Handgun Control, Inc.” which was later renamed the “Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.” In 1994, Sarah and Jim Brady received the S. Roger Horchow Award for Greatest Public Service by a Private Citizen, an award given out annually by Jefferson Awards.
