Rt. Rev. Msgr. Joseph A. Becker 85, a native of Manitowoc, Wisconsin,
died Tuesday morning, October 15, at St. Mary Home, Manitowoc.
Funeral services will be 11 a m. Monday, October 21, at St. Boniface
Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Principal Con celebrants of the Mass of
Christian Burial will Most Rev. Adam J. Maida. Bishop of Green Bay Diocese
and the Most Rev. Aloysius J. Wycislo, retired Bishop of Green Bay Diocese.
The homily will be offered Rev. William J. Rickert. Burial will be Calvary
Cemetery, Manitowoc.
The reception of the body at the Church, will 4 p.m. Sunday, by very
Rev. Leo J. Schmidt. A Episcopal Vicar of the Green Bay Diocese. The body will
lie state at St. Boniface Catholic Church from 4 to 9 p. m. on Sunday and
9 a.m. Monday, until the time or services. A prayer service will be held at
7 p.m., Sunday at the church.
Msgr. was born August 24, 1899, in Manitowoc, son of the late Joseph and Louise
Pankratz Becker.
After attending local Manitowoc schools he began his studies for the Priesthood
at St. Lawrence Seminary, Mt. Calvary, continuing St. Bonaventure's Seminary
of Detroit, Michigan; St. Paul Seminary of St Paul of Minnesota, and with
Rev. E. A. Radey was a member of the 1927 five member graduating class of the
St. Francis Seminary, Milwaukee.
He was ordained by Bishop Paul P. Rhode on May 4, 1927 at the St. Francis
Xavier Cathedral Green Bay and celebrated his first mass at his home parish of
St. Boniface Catholic Church, Manitowoc.
His next assignment was made June 26, 1929 when he was transferred to St. Mary
Catholic Church of Menasha where he was named principal of the High School on
October 1, 1930, becoming Pastor of that November 5, 1950, succeeding the Rt.
Rev. John Hummel. He was elevated to the title of Rt. Rev. on May 19, 1962 and
also served as Dean of Winnebago County. Msgr. Becker served St. Mary Parish
for over 40 years and retired in 1969. He then spent his first two years of
retirement at St. Mary rectory, Menasha and then his next six years at Sacred
Heart Seminary, Onieda, and then moved to St. Mary Home Manitowoc in September
of 1976.
Msgr. Becker had traveled extensively during his priesthood, having visited
Rome on five occasions, where he received a Papal audience each time. He enjoyed
his hobby of photography having accumulated over 4000 slides of photographs taken
on his trips through out the world.
Survivors include a sister, a nephew, Gregory E. Pauly of New Holstein, Wisconsin
and four nieces. He was preceded in death by a half sister Marie Fullmer.
