Russell (Rusty) E. Packard was born July 8, 1921, to Russell and Edith Packard in Sidney. Rusty passed away May 26, 2006 in Helena.

Rusty attended schools in Laurel and one year of college in Bozeman, leaving to enter the service during World War II where he was a pilot in the elite Flying Tigers. During his lifetime he enjoyed attending many Flying Tigers reunions.

Rusty married Billie Mote June 15, 1943. They had a son, Randy Bruce Packard. Billie passed away March 9, 1969.

Rusty remarried in April 1973 to Millie Sunde Burns.

Rusty was employed by Mountain Bell Telephone Company for over 30 years. While working for them he lived in Billings, Hardin, Sidney, and then finally transferred to Helena in 1979 where he retired. While in Hardin and Sidney he managed the offices for the phone company.

Rusty was always quick to help out. Rusty enjoyed taking pictures. Many couples from Sidney had their wedding photos taken by Rusty. He always had that camera ready to go and we look fondly back at many Christmas and birthday celebrations thanks to Rusty's keen eye. Rusty was involved with community and church. He was a school board member in Sidney, helped with the Methodist booth at fair time, helped with annual Methodist Valentine dinners, supplied coffee for after church gatherings, just to name a few.

He attended grandkids basketball games, graduations, weddings and even got involved in summer time fun.

He enjoyed golf with his special friends and family, and hunting in the fall, even if he didn't seem to be in the right spot at the right time just so he could get out.

Rusty always shared wonderful stories about fishing at Lake Mary, near Ronan, and provided the historical accounts of his time in the war.

He enjoyed the time he spent flying and enjoyed going up with son-in-law Pete when he had the chance.

Rusty was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Betty Essex; and an infant daughter. Rusty is survived by wife, Millie Packard; son Randy Packard of Billings; stepchildren, Linda (Pete) Carson of Bigfork, Tana Streeter of Republic, Wash., Bonnie (Tom) Campbell of Walla Walla, Wash., and Randy (Robin) Burns of Bigfork; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many special friends.

Memorial services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Friday, June 2, at Covenant United Methodist Church, 2330 Broadway, Helena. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Covenant United Methodist Church Building Fund. Retz Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
