The Fifth Bishop of the Diocese of Paterson, Monsignor Lawrence Bernard Brennan Casey was born in Rochester, New York, to Joseph Leo Casey and Agnes Madeline Switzer, and was ordained priest on June 7, 1930.

Curate at St. Mary's Church in Rochester until 1932, he served as secretary to Bishops John Francis O'Hern, Edward Mooney and James E. Kearney before being was named rector of Holy Cross Church in 1946 and of Sacred Heart Cathedral in 1952.

Appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Rochester by Pope Pius XII, he Casey received his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Cea on May 5, 1953 from Cardinal Francis Spellman, assisted by Bishops Walter Andrew Foery and Alexander M. Zaleski. Following the death of Bishop James Johnston Navagh, he was named Bishop of Paterson, New Jersey, on March 4, 1966.

Resigning the pastoral government of his See on June 13, 1977, he died two days later, aged 71.
