Professional Football Player. Born John Don Looney, he attended Sulphur Springs High School in Texas and played collegiate football at Texas Christian University (TCU). While with the Horned Frogs, Looney (at the receiver position) formed an exceptional combination with Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Davey O'Brien, which propelled TCU to a National Championship in 1938. Selected by the Philadelphia Eagles during the 8th round of the 1940 NFL Draft, Looney would be reunited with his former TCU quarterback and went on to lead the National Football League with 58 receptions and 707 yards in 1940 with the Eagles. He achieved Pro-Bowl status that year and totaled 23 career NFL games. He went on to play two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers (1941 to 1942). After retiring as a player, he remained in the sport to serve as a referee. He later became an oil businessman in his native Texas. His son Joe Don Looney was also an NFL player.
