Michel Debré
Birth: Jan. 15, 1912
Death: Aug. 2, 1996

French Statesman. He was the Prime Minister of France from 1959 to 1962. Born in Paris, he was a long-time associate of Charles de Gaulle for whom he created the Ecole Nationale d'Administration (National School of Administration) in 1946 and also led the committee to draft a new consitution for the Fifth Republic in 1958. A staunch Gaullist, he then served under President de Gaulle as Minister of Justice (1958 to 1959), Prime Minister (1959 to 1962), Minister of Economics (1966 to 1968) and Foreign Minister (1968 to 1969), and under his successor, Prime Minister Georges Pompidou, as Minister of Defense (1969 to 1973). He was also mayor of the city of Amboise (1966 to 1989, concurrent with his federal service), general counsel to the French Département (state) of d'Indre-et-Loire (1976 à 1992) and deputy to the European Parliament (1979 to 1980). His decorations and awards include: Commandeur de la Légion d'honneur, Croix de Guerre, Rosette de la Résistance and the Médaille de la France libre. Books he wrote include: "La Mort de l'État Républicain" (Death of the Republican State)1947, "Ces princes qui nous gouvernent" (The Princes Who Control our Government) 1957, "Une certaine idée de la France" (A Certain Idea about France) 1972, "Le Gaullisme" 1978, "Peut-on lutter contre le chômage?" (Can Unemployment be conquered?) 1982, "Mémoires" (in 4 volumes) 1984 to 1995, "Entretiens avec le Général De Gaulle:1961 to 1969" (Discussions with General de Gaulle:1961 to 1969) 1993, and "Combattre toujours:1969-1993" (Always Fighting) 1994.
