Professional Football Player. For five seasons (1962 to 1966), he played at the quarterback position in the American Football League with the San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos, New York Jets, Oakland Raiders and Miami Dolphins. Born Malcolm Richard Wood, he attended Lanett High School in Alabama and played collegiate football at Auburn University. Selected by the Baltimore Colts during the 12th round of the 1959 NFL Draft, Wood ended up in the AFL and totaled 60 career regular season games. He was the New York Jets starting quarterback, prior to Joe Namath and topped the 2,000 passing yardage mark twice (1963 and 1964). Wood was part of the Dolphins' quarterback rotation which included George Wilson, John Stofa and Rick Norton during Miami's inaugural season in 1966. After retiring as a player, he remained in the sport and served as a well-traveled assistant coach with the University of Georgia, Oakland Raiders, University of Mississippi, Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles, Auburn University. New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons.
