Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Villeray, Jean-Claude Turcotte was one of seven children born to an employee of a small hardware shop and his wife. Receiving his first studies at the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul parish school of Laval, he entered the Collège André-Grasset and later the Major Seminary of Montréal. Ordained priest in May 1959, he was named vicar of the parish of Saint-Mathias-Apôtre, a position he held until 1964 when he moved to France to further his studies at the Catholic Faculty of Lille. On his return to Canada, he was appointed diocesan chaplain of the Jeunesse Indépendante Catholique Féminine and of the Mouvement des Travailleurs Chrétiens, being called to the office of the clergy in 1967 and made thereafter responsible for seminarians, studies and permanent formation of the clergy and secretary of the Commission des Traitements. Procurator of the diocese of Montréal in 1977, he was named honorary canon of its cathedral chapter and eventually its vicar general in 1981. Elected auxiliary for the same see by Pope John Paul II, he received his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Suas on June 29, 1982 from Cardinal Paul Grégoire. Promoted to archbishopric of Montréal on March 17, 1990 following the retirement of the named Grégoire, Turcotte was created cardinal priest by Pope John Paul II in the consistory of November 26, 1994 with the title of Nostra Signora del SS. Sacramento e Santi Martiri Canadesi. Retiring from office on March 20, 2012, the Cardinal, known as a plain-spoken man of the people, died of serious diabetic related complications while recovered at the Marie-Clarac hospital of Montréal.
