JOHN J. CULBERTSON was born 31 May 1791 in Wilkes County, Georgia (a portion that is now in Greene County) to David C. Culbertson (1761-1796) and Clara Clarissa Browning (1765-1841), daughter of John Browning (1728-1803) and Elizabeth Demarest (?-1775). He married BETHANY HEARD (born: 2 March 1788, Wilkes County, GA; died: 8 July 1880, Union Parish, Louisiana) on 29 August 1811 in Morgan County, Georgia. She was the daughter of WILLIAM HEARD and NANCY McCLENDON. Within the next few years, they began migrating across the South, ending up in Union Parish, Louisiana. John Culbertson appears on the 1830 census of Perry County, Alabama. John and Bethany lived in Harmonton, Mississippi. In 1841, he and his wife, Bethany Heard, were in Noxubee County, Mississippi. WILLIAM MITCHELL GILL (b: 26 Apr 1813 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. d: 12 Mar 1884 in Union Parish, Louisiana) married their daughter, MARY JANE (JAMES) CULBERTSON, in their home in Noxubee County, Mississippi, on 4 March 1841. John Culbertson and William Mitchell Gill can next be found with significant land holdings in Union Parish, Louisiana, in 1853 and 1856. It is apparent that the families migrated together from Mississippi.
On the 1850 Union Parish, Louisiana, census, the John Culbertson family #783 is shown next door to the William M. Gill family #782. In 1844, William H. Culbertson, son of John J. Culbertson and Bethany Heard Culbertson received a land patent in what is now Lincoln Parish, Louisiana, in Township 20-N Range 2-W. John J. Culbertson received a number of land patents in the same area of Township 20-N Range 2-W. William Mitchell Gill received patents for two parcels of land adjacent to the John Culbertson land. Upon the death of John J. Culbertson, Bethany Heard Culbertson donated her home and a tract of land to be used for a church and cemetery. Later a new church was built on the site and is called Culbertson Baptist Church. The Culbertson and Gill land was located to the south and north of the church.

(Number 11.104) "Lincoln Parish Louisiana, 15 Sep 1874, before Eugene Howard, Deputy Clerk of the 11th Dist Court La. The pension application reads as follows:
"BETHANEY CULBERTSON, age 86, a resident of Lincoln Parish LA, widow of JOHN CULBERTSON who served the full period of sixty days in the military service of the United States in the War of 1812; he enlisted in Captain Turner's company--Genl Floyd's brigade on the 8th of Oct, 1813, and was honorably discharged in 1814.
‘Her said husband served, as a private in his said company for more than sixty days-That she does not remember the name of his regimental commander, of the No. of his regiment, That she can not remember the date of her husband's discharge from the army-and that his written discharge has been lost. That she knows of no historical account in which he engaged.
‘She married under the name of BETHANEY HEARD to said JOHN CULBERTSON on the 29th day of August, 1811, by Joseph Morrow, J.P. at the county of Morgan, State of Georgia.....
‘That her husband died at Union Parish on the 13 day of May, 1865.

She cannot recollect the name of his regimental comander, but thinks the name of his captain was Turner. At the age of 87 years, the old lady's memory is naturally impaired; but if her husband's name is, as reported, not on the roll of Capt Turner, it will be doubtless found elsewhere in Genl Floyd's command.
