Roman Catholic Saint. Foundress Hermanitas de los Ancianos Desamparados or the Little Sisters of the Abandoned Aged, Aitona born Teresa de Jesús Jornet e Ibars came from a family of farmers. Demonstrating a deep concern towards the poor from an early age, she was about to join the Poor Clares but political unrest prevented her from entering religious life. Instructed by her spiritual director, Father Saturnino López y Novoa, to take care of the local abandoned elderly people, she opened her first house for such purpose in Barbastro in 1872 which soon led to the foundation of her congregation. By the time of her death in 1897, the latter counted already fifty houses. Beatified by Pope Pius XII in 1958, she was canonized by Pope Paul VI on January 27, 1974. Her liturgical feast day is celebrated on August 26.
