S. Judith Kuhn OSB, age 93, died on Tuesday, April 14, 2015. A wake service will be held at 7:00 PM on Sunday, April 19, 2015, and the Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, April 20, 2015, at 10:00 AM, both in Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel in Yankton, South Dakota. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Joint services are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Yankton.
Eleanor Elizabeth Kuhn was born March 28, 1922, the oldest of five children of Wendelin and Rosa (Heimbuch) Kuhn of Dodge, North Dakota. In grade school, she attended a Consolidated Rural School. Her high school years were spent at St. Mary's School, Richardton, North Dakota and Mount Marty High School, Yankton, South Dakota; graduating in 1940. She graduated from Mount Marty College in 1957 and from St. Louis University in 1962 with a Masters in Hospital Administration. Eleanor entered Sacred Heart Monastery June 14, 1939. She was invested as a novice on June 23, 1940 and received the name Judith. She made first profession on June 24, 1941 and final profession on June 24, 1944.
S. Judith spent her first years in education as a teacher and principal. She was taught at Glen Ullin, North Dakota, Menominee, Nebraska and Aberdeen, South Dakota. Her second career was as Chief Executive Officer of St. Thomas More Hospital in Canon City, Colorado. She held that position from 1962 to 1987. During her tenure, the hospital built new buildings and expanded services. She then began her third career in Pastoral Ministry at St. Michael's Parish in Canon City. Her ministry to shut-ins and the bereaved was very rewarding, and she served many from 1989 to 2002. She received the Holy Father Pope John Paul II Honor Medal at Pueblo Cathedral on December 3, 2000; an honor that filled her with great gratitude to the Lord. Sister Judith retired to the monastery in 2002.
S. Judith enjoyed gardening, canning, sewing, and the companionship of her pet dog and cat. She was proud of her family's Russian roots that thrived in the soils of North Dakota. She took these hearty roots with her wherever she lived, and sunk them deep to give her strength for the hardships of life.
S. Judith is survived by her Benedictine community; her sister, Leona Hoff, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers: Ralph, Leo and John; sisters-in-law, Rosemarie, Marcella and Catherine Kuhn; and brother-in-law, Leonard Hoff.
