The Washington Times, Thursday,4 October 1917,Final Edition, page 16 - DISTRICT CHILDREN MOURN LOSS OF OLD TOY MAKER - Hundreds of Washington children have grief in their little hearts today because of the death this morning of Ernst A. Knorr, a toy dealer who for sixty years has delighted and won the love of little boys and girls. The "toy man" died at his home, 1618 Fourteenth street, at the age of seventy-six, after having been confined to his bed with heart trouble for three months. Mr. Knorr was born in Griefenbergaus-Weis, Germany in 1841. For generations his people had been engaged in the toy business; some of them carving out wooden figures that made the eyes of the youngsters sparkle. In 1854 the toy seller came to America and he moved to Washington two years later. Throughout the Civil War he kept his shop at Seventh and H Streets. His toys and smiles did much to cheer the hearts of little children, whose fathers and big brothers had gone to war. SHOP A PLAYGROUND- For thirty-three years the sunny faced old man had made his toy shop at 1618 Fourteenth street a Mecca for happy children. For sixty years he had been Santa Claus' first assistant. Before the days of large department stores children came from miles around to buy their dolls and sleds from the old man, who seemed to love them so well. During the course of his last illness children that loved him brought flowers in their chubby hands every day. Younger Washington feels its loss keenly, and it has the sympathy of its mothers and fathers. FUNERAL SATURDAY - The funeral will take place Saturday from the family residence and internment will follow in Rock Creek Cemetery. The ceremonies will be conducted by Eastern Lodge No. 7 I.O.O.F. of which the "toy man" was a member.
