Dr. Ward was a dentist. He changed his surname in 1940 from "Goldberg" to "Ward." Although the family wasn't Jewish and "Goldberg" is a common non-Jewish name in Germany, in this country "Goldberg" is often perceived to be a Jewish surname. This was WWII. Anti-Semitic people in the part of NJ where he worked were making it hard to be a dentist with the "Goldberg" surname, so he changed his surname to "Ward," which was his paternal grandmothers maiden name.
