Carl was a grandson of the founder of the Akron Paint Varnish Company. His father was mayor of Akron in the 1930s. Carl worked in the family business as Vice President of Sales. In the 1960s Carl developed and operated The Willows, a manufactured home community in Springfield Township. His passions were outdoor activities including golf and tennis at the Portage Country Club, skiing in Aspen with his daughter and son-in-law, and fishing and boating on Lake Erie. He was a member of the Izaak Walton League and the U.S. Power Squadron.
