Pioneering Sports Figure, Journalist. She was among one of the earliest accomplished female automobile racers who paved the way for a later generation which included Danica Patrick. She became an instantly recognizable figure during the 1960s with her familiar white or polka-dotted helmet. In addition to her career as a race car driver, she was a trailblazer for women in sports journalism. She studied Liberal Arts at Mills College in Oakland California and began her career as a writer with the San Francisco Chronicle, later moving on to the New York Herald Tribune. During this period, she covered such events as skiing, yacht racing and automobile racing. The later, she developed a fond interest for and began racing professionally and became associated with numerous racing and rallying teams within the United States as well as internationally. She distinguished herself, when she captured first class in the GT category at Sebring in 1961 and in 1964, she earned first class status at the Monte Carlo Rally. She was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame.
