August was one of the first settlers of South Chicago. In 1859 he emigrated to America where he joined his brother Frederick. They lived on the corner of Chicago Avenue and Wells Street, where Frederick had a saloon. He was married to Caroline Albert from Kaup, Germany. He was one of the organizers of the old Volunteer Fire Company, No. 5, of South Chicago.
