S. Evangeline Anderson OSB, age 90, died on Wednesday, May 6, 2015. A wake service will be held at 7:00 PM on Sunday, May 10, 2015 and the Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, May 11, 2015, at 10:30 AM, both in the Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel in Yankton, South Dakota. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Yankton.
Mary Rosalie was born June 17, 1924, the seventh child of William and Catherine (Sullivan) Anderson of Blunt, SD. She went to country school before her family moved to Harrold, South Dakota. Rosalie graduated in May 1941 from Harrold Public School and began working at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre, South Dakota.
Rosalie entered Sacred Heart Monastery August 15, 1942. She became a novice on June 23, 1943 and received the name Evangeline. She professed first vows on June 24, 1944 and taught elementary school in Epiphany and Aberdeen, South Dakota. She made final profession June 24, 1947. She graduated in 1949 from Mt. St. Scholastica College, Atchison, Kansas with a degree in economics and business administration, and returned to Yankton to teach at Mount Marty High School for one year. In June 1953, she received her doctorate in philosophy from Catholic University, Washington, D. C. and returned to be on the faculty of Mount Marty College until 1973. She continued serving at the College as Dean of Women 1954-57, President 1957-74, Director of Development 1974-75, Director of Financial Aid 1975-77, and Vice President of Financial Affairs 1982-89. From 1978-1982, she worked on a national study of parish life for the U. S. Bishops in New York, New York. In 1989, she was asked to serve as the Sub-Prioress and personnel director for Sacred Heart Monastery until 1997.
S. Evangeline thought of herself as a small town country girl who just happened to do things that she could never imagine herself doing. She had a deep love for her family, God, and community. In her final years she enjoyed a more relaxed schedule, helping out in the monastery mailroom, gift shop and tutoring the mentally challenged.
S Evangeline is survived by her Benedictine community; her sister, Irene Myers and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings: Dorothy Weber, Evelyn Rausch, Eleanor Hunsley, Joe Anderson, Vivian Bauer, and June Anderson.
