Embattled former Roman Catholic Bishop. George Patrick Ziemann grew up in Pasadena, California, the third of eight children born into a devout family. His grandfather, Joseph Scott, was a well-known defense attorney, and his father, J. Howard Ziemann, was a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge and dean of Loyola Law School. Two of his uncles were diocesan priests in the Los Angeles area; he was named after them. He was first ordained a Roman Catholic priest for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles on April 29, 1967. Then on December 23, 1986, Pope John Paul II appointed Ziemann auxiliary bishop of the Los Angeles Archdiocese. On July 14, 1992, Pope John Paul II appointed Ziemann bishop of the Santa Rosa Diocese. Ziemann resigned the position in 1999 amid sexual and financial scandals. He died on a Thursday of pancreatic cancer at the Holy Trinity Monastery, a modest Benedictine facility near Tucson, Arizona, he was 68. He was survived by five brothers and a sister.
