John came from Massachusetts with his father about 1798/99. He married Alluna Kingsbury on Nov 1, 1819 in St Albans. They have 5 known children before Alluna died on Aug 11 1836 in St Albans.

In his autobiography, John Whittemore was born in Lynn Massachusetts in 1796 and had the dimmest early childhood memories of being brought north through the deep snow to homestead with his parents in St Albans, Vermont. He remembered their first hut, "a crude structure, hastily built", where he and his siblings would lie upon the floor and he "much amused by seeing the squirrels run around upon the timbers over their heads".

Young John's father, a shoemaker by trade and a farmer by necessity, got off to a good start in the neighborhood, but this short period of familial happiness and adjustment was brought to a shocking end when his father died of a fast moving fever. His mother: Mrs Whittemore was left with four children under 12 "and scanty means for their support". She began taking in sewing, and the children farmed as best they could. They lived the barest of subsidences: "It may well be supposed we were poor and needy, and often in need of the comforts of Life." Winters brought particular suffering. Years Later, John remembered how it felt "To rise in the morning and see the ground covered with snow and no wood to make a fire, and no clothing to keep him warm and no shoes for his feet, but old worn out ones of his mother's, all these together make it so gloomy that he would almost give up in despair."

John prospered and became quite wealthy.

John and Aluna children: Rodney, Cordelia, Eliza, Mary Ann and Helen.

John's daughter Cordelia:

Cordelia Whittemore married on Jun 19 1844 in St Albans Vermont to Lucius Hubbard (Lucius was listed as of Lawrenceville, New York ). His last name appeared to be Hubbard in Vermont records, but when they went to New York apparently right after they married, the name shows up as Hulburd. Children: Sandford, Herbert, Rodney, Luther and Mary...They remained in New York, Lucius died bef 1900 and Cordelia died between 1900 and 1910 in Lawrence NY.

John remarried after the death of Aluna; His second wife was Samantha C. Safford and they had one child a daughter named Anna Maria (Whittemore) Safford.
